Saab Partners with Leopoly to Showcase XR Training with Saab 340 Aircraft Demo

Saab, a global leader in aerospace and defense, partnered with Leopoly to create an XR demonstration designed to showcase the potential of stereo display and virtual reality (VR) technologies for training. The project centered around the Saab 340 aircraft, a versatile model used in both civil and military applications, and served as a proof-of-concept for how XR can transform training experiences in the aviation industry.

The demo included two key training scenarios:

  • Pre-Flight Check Simulation: An interactive walkthrough of the pre-flight inspection process for the Saab 340.
  • Battery Removal and Installation: A hands-on simulation for safely removing and installing an aircraft component.

This proof-of-concept was designed to demonstrate the effectiveness of XR for training, collaboration, and decision-making, providing Saab with a powerful tool to showcase XR’s potential to their stakeholders.

The Challenge

Developing the Saab 340 demo involved overcoming several challenges:

  • Domain Knowledge Translation: Leopoly needed to acquire and understand technical knowledge about the Saab 340 aircraft and convert it into interactive and educational XR training scenarios.
  • Dual Platform Development: The demo needed to function seamlessly across two platforms – stereo displays for collaborative, immersive presentations and VR systems for fully interactive and hands-on training experiences.
  • Efficient Interaction Design: An intuitive and user-friendly system was required to ensure accessibility for all users, including those with little to no prior XR experience.

The Solution

Leopoly developed a XR demo for the Saab 340 that showcased the real-world applications of XR in aviation training.

1. Interactive Training Scenarios
The demo featured two core modules, carefully crafted to showcase XR’s training capabilities:

    • Pre-Flight Check: Users could step through the pre-flight inspection process, interact with the aircraft, and learn the key steps involved in preparing the aircraft for operation.
    • Component Handling: The demo provided a detailed, hands-on simulation of removing and installing a battery, a task designed to illustrate the potential for interactive maintenance training.

2. Flexible Platform Support
Leopoly developed the demo for two different XR platforms to cater to diverse use cases:

      • Stereo Displays: Ideal for collaborative demonstrations to decision-makers and teams, providing an immersive yet non-isolating experience.
      • Virtual Reality: Perfect for individual hands-on training, offering fully immersive, realistic interaction with the Saab 340’s components and systems.

3. User-Friendly Design
The demo was designed with simplicity and accessibility in mind. Through visual guidance and intuitive interaction systems, even non-technical users could easily navigate the training scenarios and fully grasp the capabilities of XR technology.

The Results

The Saab 340 XR demo successfully achieved its goals, providing Saab with an impactful way to demonstrate the value of XR technologies:

  • Capturing Decision-Maker Interest: Saab’s top management enjoyed using the demo, gaining firsthand experience with XR technology and understanding its potential for training and collaboration.
  • Showcasing Real-World Applications: The realistic training scenarios effectively demonstrated how XR could be used for maintenance, inspection, and other aviation procedures.
  • Dual-Platform Versatility: The demo highlighted the flexibility of XR, showing its ability to support both immersive individual training and collaborative group sessions.

Looking Ahead

The success of the Saab 340 demo solidified XR as a viable and impactful technology for training in the aerospace industry. Saab is now exploring the potential for expanded XR applications, including more complex aircraft systems and advanced maintenance procedures.

Leopoly is proud to have contributed to Saab’s vision of a regional XR Excellence Center, demonstrating the transformative power of XR technologies for aviation training. Together, we’ve taken an important step toward a smarter, more immersive future for the aerospace industry.
