Saab and Leopoly Create the Future of Maintenance Training with SARTS

Saab, a global leader in defense and aerospace, partnered with Leopoly to develop the Saab Augmented Reality Training System (SARTS) – a cutting-edge educational platform designed to revolutionize the way maintenance training is conducted for Saab weapon systems. Combining a Windows-based content creator platform and an AR module player optimized for Microsoft Hololens 2, SARTS enables instructors to build and deliver interactive training modules that guide users step-by-step through maintenance tasks using augmented reality.

By projecting a virtual twin onto real weapons or mock-ups, SARTS provides clear, touch-free instructions for each maintenance step, supporting both practical training and real-world execution. This collaboration builds on the success of the previous Saab 340 project and demonstrates the potential of AR technology for complex maintenance and operational training.

The Challenge

Creating SARTS required solving several technical and logistical challenges:

  • Complex 3D Model Import:
The PC Editor needed to support the JT file format, an industry-standard CAD/CAM format used in Saab’s manufacturing processes. The JT file format, used across Saab’s CAD/CAM environments, posed unique integration challenges due to its rich feature set and limited public documentation. Our team engineered a stable import solution that effectively bridges the JT data with our 3D training environment.
  • Seamless Cross-Platform Development:
Developing both the PC Editor and the Hololens AR Module Player in parallel required close coordination to ensure compatibility. Additionally, a custom file format had to be created to act as a bridge between the editor and player, containing the 3D models as well as the step-by-step tutorial descriptions.
  • Expanding Hardware Compatibility:
While the project was initially focused on Microsoft Hololens 2, Leopoly recognized the need for the platform to remain future-proof and compatible with newer, higher-performing AR devices.

The Solution

Leopoly delivered SARTS, a multi-platform education system that provides instructors with the tools to create, manage, and deliver engaging AR-based maintenance training.

1. PC Editor for Training Module Creation

    • 3D Model Import: The PC Editor supports the import of JT format files, enabling instructors to seamlessly integrate Saab’s existing CAD models into the training platform. Despite the complexity of JT files, Leopoly developed an error-tolerant import function to ensure reliable results.
    • Intuitive Content Creation: Instructors can create step-by-step training modules that combine 3D models with detailed instructions for disassembly, assembly, and maintenance tasks.
    • Custom File Format: The editor generates a unique file format that contains both the 3D models and the instructional content, making it easy to transfer modules to the AR Module Player.

2. Hololens 2 AR Module Player

      • Interactive Maintenance Training: The AR Module Player allows trainees to project holographic overlays onto real-world objects, providing precise, step-by-step guidance on maintenance tasks.
      • Virtual Twin Integration: Trainees can view a virtual twin of the weapon system directly on the real object, making the training highly intuitive and touch-free.

3. Multi-Platform Support
In addition to the PC Editor and Hololens AR Module Player, SARTS includes:

        • A standalone PC Player, enabling users to access training modules without AR hardware.
        • A web-based Module Player, allowing global access to training content via a browser, expanding accessibility and flexibility.

The Results

SARTS has provided Saab with a versatile, forward-thinking solution for training and education:

  • Enhanced Maintenance Training: SARTS enables trainees to disassemble, assemble, and perform maintenance on complex weapon systems with clear, interactive guidance.
  • Efficiency in Content Creation: The PC Editor simplifies the process of creating training modules, making it easy for instructors to integrate existing 3D models and craft engaging learning experiences.
  • Global Accessibility: With the addition of a browser-based player and standalone PC Player, Saab now has a multi-platform system that ensures access to training content from anywhere.

Looking Ahead

While SARTS was initially built for Microsoft Hololens 2, Leopoly is working to ensure that the platform is compatible with next-generation AR devices that outperform the now-obsolete Hololens hardware. By future-proofing the system, Saab will have the flexibility to adopt better-performing AR platforms as they become available.

SARTS represents a major leap forward in maintenance training, showcasing the power of augmented reality to streamline workflows, improve understanding, and enhance operational readiness. Leopoly is proud to continue its long-term collaboration with Saab, helping them lead the way in innovative training solutions for the defense and aerospace industries. Together, we’re redefining the future of education and maintenance through XR technology.
